Unitrends honored as top job creator

Columbia-based Unitrends has been named by Inc. magazine as one of the top five job creators for private companies in South Carolina.

The magazine tracked companies’ job creation over a three-year period, from 2008 to 2011, for the Hire Power Award. During that time, Unitrends hired 30 new employees — growing its ranks to 95 workers, according to the magazine.

In addition, the company more than doubled its revenue, earning a spot on the 2012 Inc. 5000 award list as well.

Unitrends, a provider of backup, archiving, instant recovery and disaster recovery solutions, is listed in the $10 million to $20 million annual revenue category.

Other South Carolina firms honored by the magazine include OTO Development/Palmetto Hospitality Funds, Spartanburg; Wireless Communications, Greenville; Ishpi, Mount Pleasant; and Customer Effective Solutions, Greenville.

OTO Development, which added 515 jobs from 2008 to 2011, also was ranked No. 37 nationally in job creation. Revenues for the company, which acquires, designs, builds and manages hotel properties, range from $100 million to $250 million.

Wireless Communications, which has added 206 workers during the three-year period, operates 32 retail locations in South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and West Virginia, and lists revenues in the $20 million to $50 million category. According to Inc., the company has 218 employees.

Ishpi, a Native American and veteran-owned company that provides IT services to the federal government, has added 47 workers during the three-year stretch, the magazine said. The company has 65 employees and lists revenues ranging from $5 million to $10 million.

Customer Effective Solutions, an IT services firm, has added 30 workers and lists its revenues in the $5 million to $10 million category. The company has 56 employees, the magazine reported.
