Sonoco promotes 2 to lead global businesses

Hartsville-based Sonoco promoted John Colyer Jr. and Rob Tiede to senior vice president positions for its global businesses, the packaging company said.

As senior vice president of global industrial products and protective solutions, Colyer will have responsibility for Sonoco’s global paper, tubes and cores, reels, protective solutions and related support businesses.

Tiede will serve as senior vice president of global consumer packaging and services, with the responsibility for the company's corporate customer program as well as its global rigid paper, closures, rigid plastics, flexibles, and display and packaging businesses.

Colyer and Tiede will begin their new positions Jan. 1.

Colyer has 29 years of experience with Sonoco, most recently serving as vice president of global industrial converting. He has also held numerous leadership and manufacturing positions in businesses serving industrial and consumer markets, according to a news release.

Tiede joined Sonoco in 2004. He has served as head of the company's display and packaging business; division vice president and general manager of Sonoco's flexible packaging division; and, most recently, vice president of global flexibles and packaging services. Prior to joining Sonoco, Tiede was executive vice president of Graphic Packaging International Inc., president of Sterling International and president of Bostic Packaging/CorrFlex.

Other appointments at Sonoco

  • Rodger Fuller, previously vice president of global rigid plastic and corporate customers, has been named group vice president of paper/tubes and cores, North America. He will report to Colyer.
  • With Fuller's appointment, R. Howard Coker, previously vice president of global rigid paper and closures, has been given the additional responsibilities as group vice president of global rigid paper and plastics, reporting to Tiede.
  • Ronald Leach Jr., vice president of protective solutions, will retire from Sonoco, effective March 31. Replacing Leach will be Vicki B. Arthur, vice president of protective solutions, reporting to Colyer. The appointment is effective April 1. Arthur was previously vice president of global corporate customers and division vice president and general manager of Sonoco's Kraft corporate customer team.
