More than 500 Midlands leaders and innovators chose Public Works of Heart as winner of the $5,000 Ignite Ideas Contest.

EngenuitySC also presented the 2012 Ignite Vision Award to Larry Wilson, executive committee member of EngenuitySC and venture partner at FirstMark Capital, during its Ignite event on Nov. 14.

Ignite is the organization’s annual recognition of entrepreneurship and innovation in the Midlands.

Will Bryan’s winning pitch for Public Works of Heart demonstrated how crowd funding would pay for large, public art murals around Columbia.

“Our mission at Public Works of Heart is to use the beauty of public art to improve lives and to contribute to the growing creative economy here in the Midlands,” Bryan said. “The Ignite prize money will help us move closer to our goal of installing our first crowd-funded mural in downtown Columbia.”

The other two finalists were local companies Voterheads and Koala Bottle.

Headquartered in Columbia, EngenuitySC is a public-private partnership that aims to develop the Midlands’ knowledge-based economy.
