The American Heart Association has designated Columbia Metropolitan Airport as a “Gold Fit-Friendly Worksite.”

The award recognizes organizations that understand the importance of a healthy workplace and take steps to create a culture of wellness for employees, the airport said.

The airport’s wellness program, led by benefits manager Deb Taylor, includes a variety of programs and activities that encourage airport staff to stay active and be healthy throughout the week.

One of the largest activities is the annual Runway Run 5K race, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday. More than 600 runners, including employees and area residents, are registered for the event.
