Hurricane Sandy’s devastation ripped into the flight schedule at Columbia Metropolitan Airport causing nearly a third of today’s departures to be canceled.
Flights from Columbia to the New York area, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia all were canceled, according to the airport’s website. US Airways also canceled a flight to Charlotte.
Altogether, seven of 22 departures between 8:47 a.m. and 8:39 p.m. today were canceled, and a United Airlines flight to Chicago was delayed nearly two hours. United said flights into Chicago could be delayed because high winds from Sandy were reaching into the nation’s midsection.
As result of the storm’s havoc, United, Delta Air Lines and US Airways were extending offers allowing customers with flights to the storm-impacted areas to make changes to their travel schedules without being charged a change fee.
The airlines suggested passengers check their websites for any updates on travel.
