Palmetto Health Foundation’s Walk for Life-Race for Life will be held Oct. 6 at Finlay Park in Columbia.

The 22nd annual event aims to educate people that early detection of breast cancer saves lives.

Proceeds from the event, totaling more than $6.4 million to date, are used to purchase the latest technology and equipment, such as digital mammography and ultrasound machines, to help detect cancer in its earliest stages. Proceeds also help fund research, community outreach and services provided to patients and their families.

“It’s important for everyone to know their donations will stay in our community to benefit Palmetto Health Breast Center. It’s amazing to look out among the sea of pink at Walk for Life and know that the local community is behind you and supporting your journey with their donations,” said Janet Snider, 2012 Walk for Life-Race for Life featured breast cancer survivor.

Registrants may walk in a 3.1-mile walk, or run in the certified 5K or new 10K races.

Registration is open now at walkforlifecolumbia.org. It costs $25 each for the walk and 5K race, and $30 for the 10K race. All registration fees will increase by $5 at noon Wednesday and by another $5 the day of the event.

Special incentives this year include a long-sleeve, pink T-shirt for participants who raise $250 or more; a custom Walk/Race Tervis Tumbler for participants who raise $500 or more; a fleece vest for participants who raise $1,000 or more; and a pink iPod nano for those who raise $5,000 or more.
