GSSM Foundation names new directors

The Governor's School for Science and Mathematics Foundation announced five new members for the 2012-2015 board of directors.

The new members are: Peter Barth, Greenville, The Iron Yard; Lou Cerone, Greenville, General Electric; Don Erickson, Greenville, Lockheed Martin; Jody Gallagher, Duncan, AFL; and M. Jack Sanders, Hartsville, Sonoco Products Co.

The GSSM Foundation also recently appointed the following board officers for the 2012-2013 term: Chairman Kenneth L. Smith, Greenville, Fluor Corp.; Vice Chairman Michael R. Brenan, Columbia, BB&T of South Carolina; Treasurer Peter Bristow, Columbia, First Citizens Bank; and Secretary Bob Brown, Florence, Integrated Systems Inc.

The foundation supports the mission of the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, providing supplemental funds to augment its programs and informing the public about its accomplishments and contributions to South Carolina.

The five new foundation board members join 30 current members from across the state.

The governor’s school is a two-year, public, residential high school in Hartsville, specializing in the advanced study of science, technology, engineering and math, with an emphasis on economics and entrepreneurship.

GSSM can serve as many as 300 high school juniors and seniors annually from across the state. In addition, the school impacts more than 24,000 teachers and students each year through its outreach programs.
