Columbia-based M. B. Kahn Construction Co. has been awarded a contract to renovate and expand Buist Academy in Charleston.
Kahn will renovate the existing 21,000-square-foot structure, which opened in 1921, as well as build an adjoining 68,000-square-foot building.
Buist, located at 103 Calhoun St. in Charleston, is a magnet school for advanced academic studies, serving grades K-8.
Much of the original building has been gutted and the foundation is undergoing seismic upgrades to better withstand an earthquake.
The exterior improvements for the original building include repointing of the brick and replacing the windows to match the mullion pattern of the original design.
The total cost of the project, set to be completed in time for the 2013 school year, is estimated to be $25 million.
