Roughly 36% of her total contributions came from outside South Carolina during the second quarter; since 2009, 35% of Haley’s contributions have come from outside the Palmetto State.
Edwin Bender, executive director of the National Institute on Money in State Politics, has said governors are easy targets for out-of-state money because they deal with multi-state issues.
But, Bender said, anytime researchers see out-of-state funding rise above 20%, “we kind of scratch our heads.”
Roughly 60 businesses or groups representing business interests contributed to Haley’s campaign during the second quarter.
Contributions of $3,500 — the maximum mandated by law — came from Nexsen Pruet, the S.C. Home Builders Self Insurers Fund, Progress Energy Service Co., the S.C. Society of Anesthesiologist Political Action Committee, and others.
Out-of-state businesses made up roughly 48% of the total business contributions. Those donors included Mednax PAC, a Florida political action committee representing health professionals; Infrastructure Corporation America based in Tennessee; Radiation Therapy Services Inc. in Florida; and others.
