Columbia to open greenway tunnel

Mayor Steve Benjamin will announce today the completion of the Vista Greenway Tunnel, a cycling and walking venue utilizing an abandoned rail corridor to link the intersection of Lady and Lincoln streets with the city of Columbia’s riverside greenway.

The ribbon-cutting event will take place at the corner of Lincoln and Lady streets at 5:15 p.m.

The Vista Guild, Palmetto Conservation and the Vista Greenway Committee will join the mayor to officially mark the completion of the Vista Greenway Tunnel project.

In addition to a preview tour of the tunnel, Benjamin will announce plans for phase two of his bike friendly initiative with the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Community in collaboration with additions to the tunnel project realization.

in light of an increasing number of cycling fatalities in our state, THIS is good news, not merely that we have a new bike/ped venue, but that astute politicians are finally sitting up and taking notice of the issues. And, btw, economic impact studies support the notion that bike ped investment brings great return to any city bold enough to do so.
