S.C. State appoints associate VP for Academic Affairs

John D. Jones was recently appointed as associate vice president for academic affairs at S.C. State University. 

Jones will report to the vice president for academic affairs and will be responsible for managing academic processes such as tenure and promotion, accreditation preparation, faculty recruitment and annual assessment performance plans. 

He also will work with the application of new technologies to the teaching/learning process. He will work with the director of University Computing and Information Technology, as well as with the executive director of Institutional Effectiveness and SACS Accreditation. 

Jones most recently served as associate provost and accreditation liaison for Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C. 

Jones has 13 years of higher education experience at the senior administrative level, seven of which are direct experiences in academic administration as an associate and assistant to the chief academic officer. His other experiences in higher education administration include assessment of student learning and academic administrative operations, academic program assessment and development/implementation and grants writing.

He has been an administrator at four different Historically Black colleges and universities, and is an expert on institutional accreditation and consults with colleges and universities across the Southern region.  

Jones completed his undergraduate education at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., where he graduated magna cum laude in 1983. After working with the Department of Social Services in Mecklenburg County, he completed his masters and doctorate degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in education research and evaluation and higher education leadership. 

He is a resident and native of Kings Mountain, N.C.
