South Carolina scored in the top 6 for cost of doing business and work force but ranked poorly in the quality of life, economy and education categories in CNBC’s fourth annual America’s Top States for Business report.

South Carolina ranked No. 31 overall.

The state’s ranking jumped six spots from last year, but South Carolina remains well behind its Southeastern neighbors. North Carolina ranked No. 4 in the nation, while Georgia ranked No. 10. Texas topped the list, while Alaska ranked last.

CNBC scored all 50 states using public data and 40 measures of competitiveness, which were then placed into 10 categories from input from business groups including the National Association of Manufacturers. In calculating each state’s overall ranking, categories are weighted based on how frequently each is cited in state economic development marketing materials.

Categories measures are:

    - Cost of Doing Business
    - Workforce
    - Quality of Life
    - Economy
    - Transportation & Infrastructure

    - Technology & Innovation
    - Education
    - Business Friendliness
    - Access to Capital
    - Cost of Living
