As American Eagle Airlines on Thursday launched a new nonstop flight from Charleston to Miami, the airline announced it will offer a second nonstop flight to Miami starting in April.

American Eagle Airlines often starts with one flight in a new market, said Andrea Huguely, an airline spokeswoman. But early on, the demand for the Charleston-to-Miami route was strong.

“By the time we got to the inaugural of this first flight, we could see how well it was doing (through ticket sales) and decided that the market could support a second flight,” Huguely said in an e-mail.

The airline in late July announced the flight that began service yesterday.

That flight departs from the Charleston International Airport at 12:05 p.m. and arrives in Miami at 1:50 p.m. A return flight leaves Miami International Airport at 2:25 p.m. and arrives in Charleston at 4 p.m.

However, the schedule will change with the addition of a second nonstop flight April 6, Huguely said.

Starting April 6, flights will leave Charleston daily at 7 a.m. and 5:40 p.m., she said, arriving in Miami at 8:45 a.m. and 7:25 p.m.

Return flights will leave Miami at 3:35 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., arriving in Charleston at 5:15 p.m. and 11:10 p.m.

Airline and local officials on Thursday touted the new nonstop link between Charleston and Miami as a convenient link to destinations in other parts of Florida as well as the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Latin America.

American Eagle Airlines is operating 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 jets for its flight between Charleston International Airport and Miami International Airport.

Miami is a hub for American Airlines, the parent company of which operates American Eagle Airlines.

The airline already offered daily nonstop service to Charleston from its hub in Dallas/Fort Worth.
